Why is it more computationally demanding / more expensive to create a Bitcoin address that has a lower case character after the "1"?
There is something I don't understand about the processing power needed to create Bitcoin addresses. I was playing around with sites that create vanity addresses (just for the experience - no need to remind me "not your keys not your coin") when I observed something that appeared odd. It costs more to create an address that starts with a lower case than it does to create an address that starts with an upper case. For example on one site: MattE - 0.001 MATTE - 0.001 MatteY - 0.025 MATTEY - 0.025 matte - 0.025 mattey - 0.2 mATTE - 0.025 MaTTE - 0.01 mATT - 0.001 MATT - free "mATTE" (starts with lower case followed by four upper case) is 0.025 while "MaTTE" (starts with one upper case, one lower case, then three upper case) is 0.01). The level of "difficulty" reflected these differences in price. Why is it more expensive to create an address that starts (after the "1") with a lower case?
Noob to bitcoin addresses and wallets. How is it possible to create a bitcoin address before a password is assigned?
Why don't you assign a password to a public address when it's created? In other words, you're securing things after the fact. Is this done with a bitcoin wallet? Why can't someone just go through random public addresses and assign them passwords before they are secured with a wallet?
I created a Bitcoin address/private key using a key of characters I memorized, in hopes of having an offline wallet that I can't lose. It's all working, but after importing the address to a wallet, how do I keep these funds from moving to another address in my wallet for no reason?
First off, I'll admit I'm not the most Bitcoin-savvy person out there. I just wanted to use a unique method to, well, protect my Bitcoin funds from myself. I understand this isn't the most secure method of storing BTC, but I really want to make this work. This would be possible due to me using a key saved in my brain to gain full access to an address. Cool idea, and I managed to get it working and funded, but whenever I import the address into an existing wallet, I can't for the life of me use those funds without my wallet program transferring the entirety of it to my wallet's first address at the same time for some reason. What can I do? I don't want multiple addresses, I just want this one. I can't find a way to "delete" addresses in the wallet to only keep this one, and even if I could, I'm somewhat worried I'll accidentally send all my funds into an abyss, which is the exact opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish by having an address that I can fully access using information stored in my brain. Is it possible to learn who created a Bitcoin address?
This is a fairly dumb question. Is it possible to determine the creator of a Bitcoin address from the address itself. For example: the address could be generated by Coinbase, or BTC-E, or Blockchain.info. If one had an address would it be possible to learn the creator? I am sure the answer is "no" but wanted to confirm.

Create unique bitcoin address per order without access to a private key?
I have a service for which I would like to use bitcoin payments. An item to be payed for is represented by a hash. I would like to generate the unique bitcoin address for the payment either on the client, or on a server with a "watch-only" wallet. Is it possible to generate a bitcoin address from a public key+hash, such that later the the bitcoins are accessible with private key+hash? To clarify, I think I should:
create a public key/private key once, on a secure computer.
for each "order", create a bitcoin address from the (public key + order hash)
verify the payment on the server for an order, using the same (public key + order hash)
Later, collecting the money from the secure computer using (private key + order hash)
Is this possible? Is there already an address-generation scheme that allows this? Note: I could use a single bitcoin address and put the order hash in OP_RETURN, but as I understand this is not currently supported by QR codes/bitcoin URIs.

Do you need to take extra steps to make your wallet aware of beyond 999 addresses? What's the Electrum behavior for this? How many addresses it generates by default?
